BBC Countryfile at Wirral Kite Festival 2010

A beautiful, BEAUTIFUL Saturday at the Wirral Kite Festival last weekend. BBC’s Katie Knapman and her Countryfile crew were in attendance interviewing various folk (including kiting legend Robert Brassington from Tasmania) and capturing the vibe of this brilliant event. New Brighton, being right on the mouth of the River Mersey is an ideal position with coastal winds so there were a good few happy kite fliers.

Even got to take Erin and Sarah along (a rare occasion on a job!) and Erin freaking loved it. So much so that we’re taking a trip to the beach today for some more!

Tom Reilly

Had a whistle stop preview tour of new Liverpool John Moores University building named after Tom Reilly. Fingers crossed scheduled to go back and shoot it again when its fully operational, its housing all the sports sciencey things that JMU has a brilliant name for. Some really hi-tech equipment in there, looking forward to returning. Certainly a different looking building and looks real good next to a re-clad Byrom Street building.

Commercial District, Liverpool

I spent a few days out around the commercial district of Liverpool last week for a client. I’ve not really photographed this area of Liverpool before, mainly because I’ve thought its quite dull and lifeless, the sort of association you make with all general business environments I guess. I started off just quietly sitting in Old Hall Street coffee shop Costa. I was weighing up what streets I’d need to cover, before I knew it things were just happening around me. People chatting, laughing on the way into work, couriers hurtling through the street, deliveries being taken. Suits and skirts flying by. I raised the camera and people barely noticed it, can often be a pain to remain inconspicuous when trying to capture street photos – I guess they’re just to busy to notice.

I was genuinely surprised by the vibrancy and quirks. From the well dressed man carrying a bag of ball pond balls, to the lady in red, mobile phone and coffee cup in hand running to catch the train. The buildings and architecture too, the ornate India Buildings and the contemporary 20 Chapel Street are simply stunning. I feel a bit sad that I take it for granted that I get to work in Liverpool, cruising by without appreciating the fact that its a pretty damn special place to be in, thats changing daily. Going to revisit soon for sure, great feeling discovering new things in an old town.

Recent: HMS Illustrious comes into Liverpool

Nautical theme recently, shooting the two new arrivals to Liverpool. Queen Mary 2 and now HMS Illustrious. Amazing ships, real credit to the people who managed to get these crowd pullers into Merseyside :)
