This is the Palm House in Sefton Park, Liverpool. I’ve shot weddings here lots and lots of times now, but never a gig. Had a great time, actually went earlier than I should of and stayed later than I should have but it really was a great event. Great tunes, great vibes and an eclectic mix of folk lovers. The folk scene in Liverpool is getting bigger and bigger by the day.
Recent: Phil Disley
This guy can draw and draw good. I thought I wasn’t aware of this guy when I got given the job of photographing him at his Liverpool based studio, however, you will of undoubtedly seen something of his at some point in your life if you’ve ever picked up a newspaper. Phil has produced illustrations for numerous worldwide publications. I’m particularly fond of his darker more macabre style stuff. Go check out his website if you get a moment, its brilliant. It’s worth noting too that he’s got his head screwed on and he features as a columnist and political debator in a few publications.
The great thing I love about doing shoots like this is that we get to hang out. We ended up chatting over a cuppa, discussing the highs and lows of working freelance, the media, the future of newspapers etc. Really puts me and the person I’m shooting at rest and we end up getting better shots because of it.
Recent: Beth Tweddle
I’m working on a large selection of location portraits for a client currently amongst other things. One of the people I photographed last week was Gymnast Olympic Gold winner Beth Tweddle. She was great, easy to work with and a laugh at the same time. I got a whole host of shots that suit the job, but this one struck a chord, I dunno it’s candid and she didn’t know I was taking it. More natural I guess. She looks like she’s bored of me setting up
Recent: British Legion – West Kirby Rememberance
Pretty amazing morning out at the Rememberance service on the top of my home town of West Kirby. I got to photograph West Kirby legend Harry Moon. Harry is somewhat of a local hero and a truely amazing individual.
Born in Hoylake nearly 90 years ago, Tomas Henry Jones MBE (Harry) served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve at HMS Irwell in Birkenhead and later HMS Eaglet in Liverpool. In 1939 he was called up to regular service in the Royal Navy. He survived the sinking of SS Cormorin and went onto serve in HMS Malcolm out of Liverpool. In this vessel he served in many theatres of the war, including, the Atlantic Convoys, the Arctic Convoys (notably convoys PQ17 and PQ18) and Operation Pedastal in the relief of Malta and also in the invasion of North Africa to name but a few.
A life long crew member of Hoylake Lifeboat he was its Coxswain 1974-81. In 1979 he received the RNLI Bronze Medal when the lifeboat saved the catamaran Truganini and her crew of three in a westerly storm and very rough seas.
Also in 1979, he represented the RNLI at the Royal Albert Hall for the service of Rememberance. He was the last RNLI Coxswain to serve in the Second World War.
Harry was one of the founder members of West Kirby Lifeboat and was the Boatman at West Kirby Siling Club 1945-84, he has worked there almost every day since. Harry and his wife Annabel are pillars of the West Wirral Community.
